Letter: Cramer, Tea Party overturning democracy
In 2001, I signed up to serve our country. While serving in Iraq, I made an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. I also swore to bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution.
Remembering those words, I am compelled to speak out against the shutdown that one faction of one party of one branch of government has perpetrated on the American people.
Rep. Kevin Cramer and his fellow Tea Party extremist Republicans in the House shut down services to vets like me and made the waiting line even longer for veterans to receive benefits just to make an extra-constitutional attack on a law that was duly passed and upheld. A law that, I might add, will provide affordable health care to 40 million of my fellow citizens.
In America, we hold elections to set the direction for our country. The Constitution I swore to uphold says nothing about holding millions of Americans hostage to overturn the results of democracy.
