Letter to the Editor: Recognize the Red Cross in March

March is Red Cross Month and the American Red Cross recognizes our "Everyday Heroes" who help their community by giving of themselves -- the volunteers, class takers and financial supporters who help us assist those in need.

March is also a great time to become part of the Red Cross by doing things such as developing a preparedness plan for the household, becoming a Red Cross volunteer or taking a class.

The Red Cross responds to nearly 70,000 disasters a year in this country. It provides 24 hour a day support to the members of the military, veterans and their families; is on call 24 hours a day to respond to fires and other disasters and trains more than 7 million people in first aid, water safety and other life-saving skills every year.

Here in the Minn-kota Region, we responded to 161 local emergencies, assisted 944 individuals and trained over 43,000 people in lifesaving skills over the last year. We thank those whose generosity enables us to continue our work, and encourage everyone to become an "Everyday Hero" during Red Cross month by helping their neighbors.
