Letter: No matter what problems you may have, just smile
As a near-lifelong resident of the city of Dickinson, I can attest to the changes, for better or worse that we’ve all seen. No, the oil didn’t benefit everyone. No, it’s not going away anytime soon. I understand the new residents to our community complaining about the lack of shopping or eating, and I definitely understand the longtime residents complaining of the spike in pricing on just about everything.
I consider myself a very lucky man. I’ve got a wonderfully supportive wife, a beautiful daughter and another on the way, all while being fortunate enough to own a home and have a great job. That being said, I’ve had my share of poor jobs and circumstances, barely living paycheck to paycheck, and always looking for the next big thing. My point is this: I may have had bad jobs, but there was one common denominator. I always put on a smiling face, made people laugh or smile back and, believe it or not, made the best of every situation. Now I’m not saying I don’t have bad days or my own set of complaints about this town or anything else for that matter, but you’d never know it meeting me face to face.
To the service industry or other lower-waged workers of this town, we as a Dickinson community appreciate what you do. Although you may hate your job, it is a job that you chose, or at least it’s the best that you could currently qualify for, so why not make the best of it.
Instead of grumbling to the customers at the fast-food counter, or trying your hardest to keep a frown while running the checkout line at the grocery store, why not cheer up the next person you meet or make them smile. Maybe that person is having a horrible day and seeing your horrible day is like a super explosion of double negativity that rains on everyone’s parade!
Be grateful for the things you have in this life, whether large, small, old, new, fancy, rusty, whatever!
A roof over your head and a paycheck every two weeks is better than standing in the unemployment line and sleeping under a bench.
