Letter: Rick Berg may be the one to help with Amtrak, transportation trouble

I am a railroad travel advocate. I wish to see Amtrak railroad passenger service continue operating via Fargo, Grand Forks, Devils Lake, Rugby, Minot, Stanley and Williston.

Rep. Rick Berg (R-ND), among others, saw to it that service, with needed track repairs between Fargo and Minot, would remain via Grand Forks, Devils Lake and Rugby. Because Grand Forks is close to northwestern Minnesota, this is a transportation blessing to our state as well.

The transportation options of northwest Minnesota are not plentiful. The Grand Forks train stop is beneficial to Minnesota communities, such as East Grand Forks, Crookston, Thief River Falls, Red Lake Falls, Warren, etc.

In the June 12 primary on the Republican side, I endorse Berg as the candidate in the U.S. Senate race in North Dakota.

Besides keeping Amtrak routed via Grand Forks, I do believe that because the "Empire Builder" is overburdened, a second Amtrak route between Chicago and Seattle/Portland is needed. The second train should operate via Breckenridge, Minn., and Wahpeton, Fargo, Valley City, Jamestown, Steele, Bismarck, Mandan and Dickinson.

After that, a third connecting South Dakota leg via Aberdeen and Mobridge, S.D., and Hettinger on to Terry, Mont., connecting with service via Billings, Mont., (the same route via Bismarck) and on to Great Falls and Shelby, Mont., -- connecting with the same route via Minot).

Amtrak railroad passenger service is vital in filling the transportation needs of rural and small-town America. I feel Berg sees that need in North Dakota too. I wholeheartedly endorse Berg for U.S. Senate serving North Dakota.
