Since 2001 the Best Friends Mentoring Program has championed recycling in our community, growing to a cumulative 12 tons of aluminum cans recycled and not going into the Dickinson landfill!

Besides recycling aluminum cans, Best Friends recycles ink and laser jet cartridges, cell phones, iPods and MP3 players. Each of these items contains toxic chemicals or materials that don't break down and can leach harmful substances. Best Friends partners with several zero-waste facilities that are situated outside of North Dakota to recycle these items.

Best Friends' recycling efforts recently expanded. When G&G Recycling announced it would end its collection route, Best Friends worked with G&G and local businesses to continue to collect from those businesses. We now have nearly 70 companies on our collection route.

Best Friends can't do it without great volunteers and community support. We invite community participation through recycling at home, work or school, volunteering a few hours with the recycling program, or donating cash or fuel gift certificates to help cover expenses.

Best Friends encourages the Dickinson community to go green! Recycle what you can and turn your trash into treasure for Best Friends. Best Friends serves more than 125 at-risk youth each year with caring role models and mentors, and all recycling proceeds are directed to the Best Friends Mentoring Program.

Aluminum can be bagged and deposited into the outdoor collection bins located in the parking lots at Runnings, West River Community Center, Wal-Mart and next to Westwind Consulting Center on Villard Street. Recyclable ink cartridges, electronics and accessories should be dropped off at the Best Friends office, 135 W. Villard St. To get involved, call Best Friends at 701-483-8615 or e-mail friends@ndsupernet.com.

Thank you for helping to beautify our community. Together, we are making a difference!
