Lightning strike sparks tank fire near Watford City
WATFORD CITY — Lightning sparked an oil tank fire south of Watford City on Sunday, officials reported.
Emergency crews were at the site and reported that three separate tanks caught on fire. A photo showed the tops of two tanks melted.
No injuries were reported.
The strike hit a salt water disposal well owned by Secure Energy Services at approximately 7 p.m. Sunday evening, McKenzie County Emergency Manager Jerry Samuelson said.
The company, which operates oil drilling, recovery and disposal services in the United States and Canada, uses the site for as a 24-hour standalone water disposal facility.
McKenzie County emergency staff said fire crews brought water to the site in an effort to keep the fire from spreading.
Emergency crews reported almost three hours after the fire started that they had successfully extinguished the oil tank fires after spraying them with chemical foam.
