Locals cash in during Cowboy Christmas

Bucky Kukla has been looking for a victory to kick start his summer. The Killdeer cowboy got one at home.

Kukla won the bull riding at the Killdeer Mountain Roundup Rodeo with an 84-point ride on Hillbilly Bone. He pocketed $1,317 with the win and was the lone local contestant to win at Killdeer.

Shane Moran won the saddle bronc riding with an 80 on I'm No Angel and Lee Lantz's 79-point ride on Stoneville took the top spot in the bareback riding.

Former Black Hills State football standout Forest Sainsbury capped a good week with a win in the steer wrestling at 3.8 seconds. He took second place to Dean Gorsuch at the Mandan Rodeo Days.

Rex Treeby and Robert Carlisle tied for the win in the team roping with times of 8.5 seconds. It helped Treeby earn all-around cowboy for the rodeo with $1,685 in earnings. He competed in the team roping but didn't finish in the money.

The teams of Cole and Jess Morgan and Bubba Buckaloo and Matt Zancanella tied for the top spot in the team roping at 4.4 seconds. Tera Moody won the barrel racing in 15.68 seconds, edging Roughrider Days Rodeo winner Theresa Walter by .16 for the victory.

Elsewhere, Golden Valley bull rider Abe Dillman pocketed a huge win at the Black Hills Round-Up rodeo.

Dillman was the only cowboy to score a qualified ride, an 87 on D&H Cattle's Shepherd Hills Sod Buster, to pocket the entire purse of $4,496.

Dickinson State alumnus Ty Thompson beat some of the best in his field this week at the Mandan Rodeo Days three-day PRCA rodeo.

The Badlands Circuit cowboy scored an 83-point ride on Frontier Rodeo Company's War Dance to tie for the win in the saddle bronc riding with Samuel Kelts. Each pocketed $2,618. Numerous bronc riders who have been to National Finals Rodeos competed at the rodeo.

Golden Valley's Hugh Connelly and former Blue Hawk Tate Longbrake tied for the win in the saddle bronc riding at the Sitting Bull Stampede in Mobridge, S.D. The cowboys each had 78-point rides. Thompson tied for third with a 77.

At the Greeley (Colo.) Stampede, one of the biggest rodeos of the Fourth of July run known as Cowboy Christmas, veteran Jesse Bail of Camp Crook, S.D., put together an 86-point ride to win the finals of the length and well-attended rodeo to win the average and pocket a total of $5,921.

Mandan's Brittany Fleck won the long round in the barrel racing in 16.94 seconds, giving her $4,689.
