Mandan uses first half lead to defeat Midgets
MANDAN -- The Dickinson High boys basketball team wanted to cut down on its turnovers, but it's performance from the field is what ailed them Saturday.
Mandan jumped out to an early lead en route to a 60-46 win over Dickinson in a West Region game.
"In last part of the game, we held them a little bit better," Dickinson head coach John Wilson said. "They just outplayed us in the first half and got a jump on us."
The Braves (7-4, 5-3 West) took a 42-21 lead over the Midgets at halftime. Dickinson shot 20 percent from the field in the first half.
"We got some decent (looks), but they just would not fall," Wilson said. "They were shooting well. They shot 44 percent."
The Midgets (3-7, 1-7 West) played better defense in the second half, only allowing Mandan 18 points. However, the 21-point margin Mandan created in the first half was too much to overcome.
"If you look at the stat line, you could say we beat them in the second half, but we were down too deep to start off," Wilson said.
Mandan had three players in double figures. Erron Collins and Aaron Janz each had 15 points, while Devin Coyle added 14.
The Midgets were led by Jesse Kessel for the second straight game with nine points. Jon Wanner posted eight.
Dickinson hopes to put its shooting and turnovers woes behind them when it visits Bismarck Century at 6:45 p.m. Thursday.
"We just can't worry about who we are playing," Wilson said. "We've got to worry about ourselves. We just have to start playing relaxed, confident and have fun."
