McGregor joins Press sports staff
The Dickinson Press welcomed new sports and outdoors reporter Royal McGregor to its staff on Tuesday.
"I hope to bring stories that express how solid the sports programs are around the Dickinson area," McGregor said.
McGregor, a native of Watertown, S.D., is the process of finishing his studies at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D. He will graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Contemporary Media and Journalism at the end of the summer.
He worked at USD's heralded student newspaper, The Volante, for a year and half but also gained a great deal of experience at The Yankton (S.D.) Daily Press & Dakotan.
He most recently worked in Yankton since September 2009 as a part-time sports reporter, covering everything from preps to Division I athletics and golf.
"McGregor will make a fine addition to The Press' sports staff and to the southwest North Dakota community," Press Sports Editor Dustin Monke said. "He has a work ethic and attitude our readers enjoy and the experience to ensure coverage of sports in our area remains as strong as it has been in the past."
McGregor participated in soccer, baseball and track and field growing up and said his favorite sports to cover are golf and baseball.
McGregor said he didn't decide to become a sports reporter until his sophomore year at USD. He was originally a pre-med major.
"I was walking home from the library and I decided that the one thing I did like and didn't stress me out was sports," McGregor said. "I can play, I can talk about them, that's what I want to do. So, the next semester, I changed my major and haven't looked back ever since."
McGregor can be reached at email@example.com or by phone at 701-456-1214. Read McGregor's blog online at sirroyal.areavoices.com or follow him on Twitter @SirRoyal.
