McMillan named FCC director of newspapers
FARGO –- Matt McMillan has been named the new director of newspapers for Forum Communications Co.
McMillan will oversee the publishers and general managers of the more than 35 daily and weekly newspapers the company owns in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
A native of St. Cloud, Minn., McMillan studied liberal arts, journalism and business at the University of Minnesota.
He got his career start selling advertising at Minnesota newspapers in Minnetonka, Minneapolis and Cambridge. He later served 17 years as publisher of the Hutchinson (Minn.) Leader and several other publications, including Crow River Press.
Most recently, McMillan was publisher and part owner of MessAge Media, a newspaper group in the Mille Lacs, Minn., area.
“I think Forum is viewed very highly among the newspaper industry in the region. It leads in so many ways, and so I’m really looking forward to joining the group,” McMillan said.
He said he sees his role as helping publishers and individual newspapers succeed, while also serving as a conduit to help them work well together.
Bill Marcil Jr., president of Forum Communications Co. and publisher of The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead, said he has been following McMillan’s career for almost 25 years.
“It was the spring of 1989, Matt and I were working at the same newspaper around Lake Minnetonka in Minneapolis. On payday, we would buy our sandwiches at the grocery store and sit on the dock overlooking Wayzata Bay and dream about careers in the newspaper business,” said Marcil. “I have followed his career ever since. It was time that we work together again and create our next 25 years."
Forum Communications also owns Forum News Service.
