Mercer County Sheriff releases intruder’s name: Knudson charged with attempted murder

STANTON — The Mercer County Sheriff’s Department has release the name of a man that allegedly shot a Golden Valley man.

Brett Daniel Knudson, 20, of Golden Valley, allegedly entered Jeff Gegelman’s home in the small town Sunday. Mercer County State’s Attorney Jessica Binder confirmed that Knudson shot Gegelman, who allegedly returned fire and hit Knudson.

Knudson has been charged with two felonies — attempted murder and criminal trespassing — and misdemeanors of driving while his license was suspended and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the North Dakota Supreme Court website. The affidavit could not be released until a judge signed the document, Binder said, but she confirmed that the charges stemmed from the weekend shooting.

Knudson had a bond hearing Tuesday at the Mercer County Courthouse in Stanton. He is being held at the County Jail on $500,000 cash bond. A preliminary hearing has not been set.
