Midgets continue learning this season

The Dickinson High volleyball team collected five wins over the weekend.

Yet, the wins didn't always come easy. There was plenty of adversity.

The Midgets opened pool play with three wins over Sidney, Mont., Heart River, Miles City, Mont., on Friday. Dickinson moved onto the gold tournament, which possessed the top teams in the invitational.

Dickinson went 2-2 during the gold tournament including a win over Kindred to close out its tournament.

"We experienced the highs and the lows this weekend," Dickinson head coach Jay Schobinger said. "The big part is they learned some things from it and that's important. They are starting to figure out what they need to do as a team as far as playing the game with a little more emotion.

"I said at the beginning if we come out of this tournament learning from it than it was all worth it."

The Midgets defeated the Vikings in three sets 11-25, 25-23, 25-13. Marissa Schroeder, a junior middle hitter, said the team was able to learn many lessons during the weekend.

"The first day we played really well as a team," she said. "The second day we kind of struggled at the beginning, but toward the end we picked our energy up."

However, the biggest lift of confidence for the Midgets going into the tournament was getting a three-set win over Mandan on Tuesday. Schroeder said it was tough at start West Region schedule with four straight losses.

"It helped us a lot, because it got our energy and confidence up," Schroeder said. "We didn't really know what to do, because everyone else was a little more experienced than we were. We went out there and competed. We struggled, but I felt that we've come a long ways from our first match."

Dickinson also picked up a win against Stanley in the first round 26-24, 27-25. The Midgets' two losses during tournament play were against Billings (Mont.) Central 25-16, 25-11 and Fargo Oak Grove 25-19, 25-14.

The winner of the gold tournament was Billings (Mont.) Senior defeating Bismarck Century 25-18, 25-22. Billings (Mont.) Skyview won third place over Billings (Mont.) Central, 27-25, 26-24 and Bismarck High defeated Fargo Oak Grove 25-20, 17-25, 25-23 for fifth place. In a battle of two Class B Region 7 opponents, New England defeated Beulah 25-23, 28-26 for consolation championship.

In the silver tournament, Minot Our Redeemers defeated Minot 26-24, 25-18 for the championship. Mandan took a 25-21, 25-15 third-place win over Hettinger-Scranton, while Beach defeated Glasgow, Mont., for consolation championship 25-16, 25-16.

During the bronze tournament, Hazen topped Sidney, Mont., 25-21, 25-20 for the championship and Malta, Mont., defeated Plentywood 22-25, 25-17, 25-20 for consolation championship.
