GLENDIVE, Mont. -- Dennis Morris wanted to see his defense have a sharp performance.

The Dickinson High football coach got that -- and a heck of a game from his offense too.

The Midgets rushed for 269 yards and five first-half touchdowns while limiting Dawson County, Mont., to 83 total yards en route to a 44-0 victory in their season opener.

"The goal was to come out and play good, hard, physical defense and we definitely met that goal," Morris said.

Defense produced offense as the Midgets took advantage of Dawson County three-and-outs throughout the first half.

Junior quarterback Dylan Skabo rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another, sparking the Midgets to five touchdowns and a safety in a span of 9½ minutes in the first and second quarters.

"We executed sharp offensively," Morris said. "We came out and we played with confidence, which was one of our question marks."

Skabo had touchdown runs of 17 and 33 yards in the first quarter, starting Dickinson's scoring barrage with the latter 3:35 into the first quarter.

Preston Theuer, Michael Cherwinski and Jace Dukart all had first-half rushing touchdowns.

Cherwinski rushed for 129 yards on six carries and had a 30-yard touchdown run to help put Dickinson up 30-0 at the end of the first quarter.

"We're really meshing with each other real nicely now," Morris said. "Michael is getting so good at being patient and holding behind our guards when they're pulling out."

Theurer had an 18-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and Dukart took one in from eight yards out in the second quarter.

Dickinson scored its final touchdown less than 2 minutes into the third quarter on a 12-yard TD pass from Skabo to Taren Staudinger. Skabo set up the score with a 56-yard kick return to open the quarter.

Skabo rushed for 66 yards on four carries and was 2-for-4 for 40 yards passing.

There was a running clock the entire second half.

Defensively, Dickinson only forced two turnovers. One of them came on a Jordan Krieg safety almost immediately following Skabo's opening touchdown run.

Luke Herauf had a third-quarter interception for Dickinson's only takeaway.

"It was just about being sharp and executing every time we practiced the last couple weeks," Morris said. "That's where the success was."

Taylor Schwartz led Dawson County, going 8 of 19 for 51 yards passing and rushing for seven yards.

The Midgets host perennial Montana power Custer County (Miles City) at 7 p.m. next Friday at the Badlands Activities Center in their home opener.

"Next week is going to be a very physical test for us," Morris said. "We have to remain sharp."
