Midgets sweep Minot during regular finale
The Minot High girls softball team hasn’t had too many breaks in the last two weeks.
“We are tired,” he said. “We’ve had only a few days of rest. We played every day last week and almost the week before. We only had Sunday’s off. We even played on Wednesday. We are a little tired and it’s dragging. At times, we were competing. We came out and played hard.”
Dickinson High took full advantage of a tired Minot team en route to a 7-0 and 18-1 West Region sweep during the regular season finale on Monday at Dickinson’s North Complex.
“They came out and were patient at the plate,” Dickinson head coach Bill Butterfield said. “We’ve been working on that. That’s been our focus the last couple of weeks. It really showed in the second game. We relaxed, found our pitches and hit it hard. First game, we did the same thing, but hit it at them a little bit.”
During both games, the Midgets (24-4, 20-4 West Region) struck for one big inning. For the opener, Dickinson scored five runs in the first inning. In the second game, the Midgets piled on a 12-run third.
Dickinson’s senior catcher Mackee Hoffmann went a combined 4 for 6 in the doubleheader. She also supplied five RBI and two doubles. She said each player has confidence when stepping up to the plate. The Midgets posted a combined 18 hits.
“You are going to have up and down innings and you really can’t do anything about that,” Hoffmann said. “We always come up to bat knowing that everyone can hit and we always come up to hit thinking that we hit a good one.”
In the first game, Dickinson senior Haley Butterfield threw seven scoreless innings, allowed four hits and struck out six. She was backed up by the five-run first inning and the Midgets scored two more runs in the fifth. Riana Cooper and Madison Jahner supplied RBI for Dickinson.
During the second game, the Midgets and Majettes were tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the third inning. The Midgets posted 12 runs, grabbed a 13-1 lead and never looked back. Riley Cooper went 1 for 2 with two RBI and scored three runs, while Rachel Jahner was 1 for 3 with a RBI and scored three runs.
Madison Jahner, who collected the win after going five innings, also helped herself out at the plate going 3 for 4 with three RBI. Riana Cooper also went 3 for 4 and supplied three RBI and scored one run.
The Midgets look to the West Region Tournament, which begins Friday in Jamestown. Dickinson will have the No. 2 seed and will play the No. 8-seeded Turtle Mountain.
“We have two seasons,” Bill Butterfield said. “We have the regular season, which is preparation for the season that counts — the postseason. We feel we are prepared, we’ll work on the few things this week and go into the WDA with a lot of confidence.”
Hoffmann added: “We wanted to come out and prove to ourselves that we could play well. Hopefully, we can just carry that on into the tournament.”
