Midgets weather falls to win Jamestown Invite
JAMESTOWN — The start for the Dickinson High gymnastics team was far from perfect — especially after not competing since Dec. 13.
The tough start was apparent from three-time defending state all-around champion Acacia Fossum. The sophomore didn’t stick her landing on her first two events.
Nonetheless, Fossum regrouped and placed first — on the balance beam — and runner-up in the next two events to win the all-around on Friday at the Jamestown Invitational.
“It kind of felt like the first meet of the season with particularly the way we started,” Dickinson head coach Kent Van Ells said. “We had a really hard time with our first event. It was also the first away from home, so that plays in too.
“Acacia had two falls on her first two events. It seemed like a start for a rough day, but she turned around and won the all-around anyway.”
As a team, the Midgets didn’t have anyone place in the top four in the first event — vault. Van Ells said only one gymnasts landed the way she was supposed to.
However, the tough start didn’t lead to a terrible as Dickinson took first in the invitational with a score 143.750. Bismarck Century was runner-up with 141.700 points, while Jamestown was third (135.925) and Bismarck High rounded out the top four teams (135.275).
Mikaela Kessel placed runner-up in the all-around with a 36.025. The senior won the floor exercise (9.675). Century’s Jessica Gabriel won the vault (9.5), while Bismarck’s Kaylee Keller took first in the uneven bars.
The Midgets continue their season traveling to the Wahpeton Invitational at 5 p.m. Friday.
“I think the feeling of being away (from home) is something they are going to have to get used to,” Van Ells said. “That’s the best part today. Hopefully, the idea of competing every week will be there.”
