Miles City teacher sentenced for solicitation
MILES CITY, Mont. -- A former sixth-grade teacher in Miles City has been sentenced to 13 years with the Department of Corrections for engaging in online sexual conversations with someone he thought was a teenage girl.
Brian James Thompson, 32, of Glendive was sentenced July 10 by District Judge George Huss. Thompson earlier pleaded guilty to solicitation of sexual abuse of children.
Prosecutors say while Thompson was still working as a teacher he engaged in chat room conversations with someone he believed to be a 14-year-old girl. Over time, officials say he steered the conversation to "increasing overt sexual conduct." The "girl" was a Dickinson police officer.
Thompson was suspended from teaching in March 2012 and then resigned.
He apologized to the court and said he was ashamed.
