Minot blanks DHS at West Region tourney
MINOT -- The Dickinson boys hockey team got off to an awful start Thursday at the West Region Tournament.
Minot High's Matt Flom scored the opening goal 2½ minutes into the first period and Breydan Effertz shut down Dickinson the rest of the way as the No. 2 seed Magicians blanked the seventh-seeded Midgets 4-0 in the quarterfinals at All Seasons Arena.
"We didn't come out like a ball of fire, that's for sure," Dickinson head coach Tom Folske said. "We played behind the whole game."
Goalie Jamison Gray turned away 41 shots for the Midgets (8-14), who face sixth-seeded Mandan at 12:30 p.m. MST today in a loser-out game.
"We had some breakdowns in our defensive zone coverage," Folske said. When you play a team that talented, you can't afford to do that."
Morgan Martelle assisted on a pair of goals for Minot (14-7). Quinn Fuchs, Tyler Kast and Carter Bechtold each scored goals.
Minot goalie Breydan Effertz didn't see much action. Dickinson sent just nine shots his way.
"We just couldn't muster any offense tonight," Folske said. "But it's behind us. We have to have a real short memory about that and focus on tomorrow. It doesn't matter what route you take, it takes two games to get to the state tournament."
