MINOT -- The Dickinson High football team can't say it didn't have a chance to knock off No. 3-ranked Minot.

The only thing stopping the Midgets was a plague of turnovers.

The Magicians caused four Dickinson turnovers including an interception and a fumble in the redzone to take a 19-3 West Region win on Friday.

"We put ourselves in a good position to win the football game and I'm really proud of our guy's effort. They worked their tails off and I couldn't ask for a better effort," Dickinson head coach John Tuchscherer said. "It was the same story. It was too many turnovers and too many mistakes to win the football game, especially when you are playing the No. 3 team in the state. You've got to limit those and give yourself more opportunities."

Two of Dickinson's four turnovers resulted in touchdowns for Minot. The Magicians racked up 273 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Kimani Benjamin led Minot with 83 yards on nine carries.

Dickinson starting quarterback Charles Splichal went 13 of 29 for 215 yards and three interceptions. The junior quarterback also had 12 carries for 37 yards. Through the air, Splichal connected with four different receivers including Dylan Skabo for 91 yards on six catches.

Michael Cherwinski led the Midgets' rushing attack with 56 yards on 13 carries. Dickinson had a total of 118 yards on the ground.

"We moved the ball pretty well from the 20 to the 20," Tuchscherer said. "Then when we got into the redzone a couple times, we stalled out or turned the ball over. Yardage wise it was one of the better games that we had."

The lone points the Midgets scored were from the leg of kicker Tony Kostelecky. The junior connected with a 34-yard field goal with 11 minutes, 3 seconds left in the first half.

In the first quarter, Minot scored the opening touchdown at the 4:07 mark on a 14-yard run by Brady Lampert. The Magicians scored their second TD of the game on a 33-yard pass from Ben Bolinske to Tre Kinchen with 6:17 left in the first half. Minot tacked on one more TD on as Lampert scored from two yards out.

Both teams were held scoreless in the second half.

With the loss, the Midgets moved to 3-3 on the season and 1-3 in West Region play. The Magicians are 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the West Region.

Dickinson now travels to Devils Lake for a nonconference game next Friday. Tuchscherer knows his team has the potential to compete with the top teams in the state, but the mishaps and mistakes have to be slim to none.

"What we talked about after the game is that we are a good football team, but if you want to compete with the top teams in the state, you can't shoot yourself in the foot," Tuchscherer said. "You've got to use every opportunity you get and you can't let those opportunities slip."
