BISMARCK (AP) -- North Dakota's parks director wants the power to impose fines of up to $250 for breaking park rules.

The North Dakota Senate's Natural Resources Committee is reviewing the bill Friday.

The legislation would allow the state Parks and Recreation Department to draft rules that apply to the state's park system and decide what the fine should be for breaking them.

Some park rule violations already carry criminal fines. The proposed parks department law would replace some of those with fines comparable to a traffic ticket. They wouldn't be counted as criminal violations.
