The North Dakota Game and Fish Department is proceeding with plans to improve Patterson Lake.

The drawdown began July 2 and two rain storms refilled the reservoir. Because of the rain, the drawdown has not progressed as planned, according to the department.

The process is designed to improve the lake after winterkill took out most of the fish.

In order to "catch up" with the drawdown, additional water will be released through the bascule gates. Beginning Friday, NDGF will release up to 300 cubic feet per second from Patterson Lake.

This is designed to lower the lake 3 feet by July 31, then a more gradual lowering will occur until the lake is drawn down 10 feet in early to mid September, according to NDGF.

These additional releases will not flood anyone, but it may make low water crossing on the river between Patterson Lake and Lake Tschida unusable for smaller vehicles, according to the department.
