NDSU opener to be shown on Fox Sports 1
FARGO — For the second straight year, North Dakota State’s football season opener will be seen on national television. This time, it appears it was more about NDSU than its Big 12 Conference opponent.
Fox Sports 1 announced it will carry the Bison at Iowa State game on Aug. 30 at 11 a.m. The network carried the NDSU at Kansas State game last year as part of the debut of the network.
The Bison are coming off a third straight Division I FCS national title and the fact they’ll be going for their 25th straight win appealed to Fox Sports 1, said Jeremy Jorgenson, NDSU’s director of broadcasting.
“In the discussions I had with them, they’re excited with what we have going on right now,” he said. “It was more about NDSU than Iowa State to be honest.”
Iowa State finished 2-10 last season. Jorgenson said if Fox Sports 1 hadn’t entered the picture, it was looking probable the game wouldn’t have been available to television viewers in North Dakota.
“Before Tuesday, it was trending no television,” Jorgenson said. “I think they were wrestling with the overall profile of NDSU and whether that was one to get one of the national TV slots.”
Jorgenson said the Big 12 gives each school one game they can control with their own television rights and the debate with ISU was the NDSU or University of Toledo game.
NDSU will be the national game and Toledo will be the institutional broadcast.
NDSU opened last year with an upset of defending Big 12 champ K-State, a game that did well in the ratings, Jorgenson said. It also didn’t hurt that NDSU hosted ESPN’s “College Game Day.”
“I think Fox took a look at the overall exposure we got last year,” he said. “These games against FBS teams that get national exposure are huge.”
Jorgenson said every Bison game will be on TV this year. He said an announcement will come later in the summer on the details.
