After drawing the 160-pound card to start the dual, the Bismarck High wrestling team felt good about its chances.

And for good reason.

The Demons were starting with returning state champions Ryan Blees and Ricky Galindo.

No. 9-ranked Bismarck used nine pins to defeat No. 9 Dickinson 63-10 in a West Region dual on Tuesday at the DHS gymnasium.

"If there's one part of our lineup that would be a good place to pick from, because it starts the whole momentum effect," Bismarck co-head coach Scott Knowlen said.

The loss to the Demons marks Dickinson's first West Region dual defeat of the season. The Midgets are now 4-1 against West Region opponents.

Dickinson co-head coach Pete Dobitz knew the opening two matches were going to be tough. Blees (160) and Galindo (170) each recorded pins over Michael Cherwinski and Aaron Bernal, respectively. The returning state champions took a combined 3 minutes, 37 seconds to pin their two opponents and quickly gave the Demons a 12-0 lead.

"It started right away in their favor with those two state champions," Dobitz said. "As a team you have to overcome that type of stuff."

Though Blees and Galindo are returning, Drew Kary (182) isn't shy about winning either being a returning state runner-up. Kary took a 6-4 decision over Jace Dukart.

One match later, the Midgets finally got on the board with Chris Sickler (220) pinning Ben Strombeck in 1:09. The Dickinson junior was hoping to start a shift in momentum.

"I was just hoping it was start something for the all the other guys," Sickler said.

The shift never came.

Bismarck responded with back-to-back pins from Tristan Hall (285) and Taylor Nein (106). Dickinson's Austin Hutzenbiler (113) took a major decision over Alex Hoffman 14-1 for Dickinson's final victory.

The Demons' followed up that loss with pins in three of the next four matches. Bismarck's Lane Kaseman seized a 4-1 decision over junior Devin Berger at 132.

"This was our third dual meet of the year," Knowlen said. "This is probably the sharpest we've been all season. We were pretty happy to see that."

Though the Midgets only won two matches, Dobitz felt the team had many opportunities for pins. A couple of those opportunities came from Michael Dobitz (152), who was pinned by Josh Brilz in the third period. The Dickinson senior went point-for-point and had Brilz on his back multiple times.

"Everybody in the state is trying to build what Bismarck has," Pete Dobitz said. "We're trying to do the same. You can still see that there's a gap there, but we're working hard to overcome that gap."

Dickinson's final home dual of the regular season is against Mandan at 6 p.m. Thursday -- and it's a big one in terms of whether or not the Midgets stand a chance at reaching the Class A state dual tournament in February.

"Thursday is probably a bigger dual than tonight, coaches said," Sickler said. "We're going to have to go out more ready and more prepared than we did tonight."

"You have to have a short memory," Pete Dobitz added. "We have to put this behind us right now."
