WESTHOPE — Three barrels of oil were released Sunday into a slough six miles southeast of Westhope in Bottineau County, North Dakota Department of Health officials said.

The spill was discovered about at 2 p.m. Sunday at a site owned by Enduro Operating due to a broken pipe at the wellhead.

The oil, along with a small amount of brine, spilled into a large slough covering about 80 acres or more, said Kris Roberts, an environmental geologist with the Health Department.

“A very small part of the slough was impacted; only a few hundred square feet had oil on the water surface,” Roberts said.

The company reported that two barrels of oil had been recovered by vacuum truck. Absorbent booms were placed around the spill to keep it from spreading.

Oil & Gas Division and Health Department personnel were on scene to assist with cleanup and remediation.

Authorization was given Tuesday to burn off the remaining oil, Roberts said. The contaminated soil will be removed from the site.
