Chelsea Peterson and McKayla Howling Wolf combined for 41 to lead Mandan to a 70-54 West Region win over Dickinson on Tuesday at DHS gymnasium.

“We didn’t play terrible, we didn’t play great,” Dickinson head coach Dan Pender said. “We had spurts of good stuff and sometimes not such good stuff.”

Dickinson senior Avery Privratsky made the game’s first basket with no time left on the shot clock at the 16 minutes, 49 seconds mark and jump started the Midget’s lead. Dickinson’s biggest lead of the game came after Privratsky made her putback shot off of junior forward Meryl Kovac’s to go up 9-6, but Mandan scored three unanswered baskets to take the permanent lead.

With 7:32 to go and Mandan holding a small 19-17 lead, Howling Wolf made her layup to help her team drastically pull away. The senior guard finished with 21 points.

The Braves outscored the Midgets 19-7, but Dickinson sank the last three shots of the half, the first two by Privratsky and a foul shot by senior Riana Cooper to make it a 42-29 deficit.

Privratsky and Cooper logged double digits for Dickinson, recording 12 and 17, respectively. Privratsky also led the team with eight rebounds.

“First half our defense wasn’t very good,” Cooper said. “Defense always brings offense and we got some shots on offense but our defense wasn’t very good. Definitely not as good as we’ve been playing.”

Privratsky added: “We had too many turnovers with, like, the press just throwing it around and not taking it to the hoop and draw fouls.”

The Midgets were plagued with fouls and turnovers which made it difficult to try and come out of its hole. Mandan opened the second half with two consecutive shots by Hannah Hanson and Howling Wolf and built up a 21-point lead, 55-34, with 12:58 to go. Chelsea Peterson finished with a game-high 22 points, six assists and seven steals.

Dickinson shot 16 for 41 (39 percent) on the night, but committed 29 turnovers and picked up 19 fouls. The Midgets capitalized on its trips to the free-throw line, shooting 78 percent (18 for 23), but its efforts cancelled out as Mandan made 18 of its 26 attempts.

“The telltale story, fouling,” Pender said. “We went to the line a lot, but they went to the line a lot. I think that was part of the game and they shot pretty well. Second half we did a pretty good job, but they shot 43 percent for the game and we just can’t give that up. They just got after it.”

Tuesday’s outcome was tough for the seniors, with some who have been playing together for more than the four years in high school.

But it isn’t goodbye just yet. The Midgets host Williston at 6 p.m. Thursday for the play-in game for the West Region Tournament. The teams have faced each other twice this season on with the Midgets coming out on the winning end.

“The confidence level for our girls should be high because we’ve beaten them,” Pender said. “It’s still going to be a battle going against I don’t care who the team is. It’s hard to beat them three times. We got to be ready for a battle and I know they’re going to be the same way.”
