Pickup that went into river likely stolen

BISMARCK — A pickup that was reported stolen is likely the pickup that was seen driving into the Missouri River this week.

Bismarck police recovered a license plate from ice on the river that matched the plate of the stolen pickup.

Police said a red 1998 Chevrolet G10 pickup was reported stolen between 8 p.m. Sunday and 8:33 a.m. Monday. About 8:30 p.m. Sunday, a person reported seeing a pickup drive onto the ice and break through into the river. The witness did not see anyone in the truck.

A maroon four-door car, possibly a Dodge Dynasty, was seen speeding away.

The Burleigh County Sheriff’s Dive and Rescue Team responded, but because of high winds and dangerously low temperatures, and the belief that no occupant was in the truck, no attempt was made to recover the vehicle.

On Wednesday, an orange tool box similar to one that had been attached to the stolen pickup was spotted in the ice. The owner of the stolen pickup identified tools found inside.

The license plate was found on the ice the next day.
