Police ask for help to find elderly Jamestown woman

JAMESTOWN — Jamestown police are seeking the public’s help in locating Ruby Grenz, 78, of Jamestown, who was last seen in Jamestown at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Police Capt. Gary Peterson said Grenz was last seen leaving the Second Avenue Salon. She was driving a silver 2005 Dodge Caravan minivan with North Dakota license plates HNW560. Peterson said there is a Hawaiian lei hanging from the rearview mirror.

Grenz is described as 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 138 pounds. She wears glasses with brown and blue frames. She was last seen wearing a rust-colored fleece Columbian coat, a red sweater and brown pants.

Peterson said police were called at 10:22 p.m. Tuesday by one of Grenz’s daughters, who had stopped by Grenz’s home to see if she was OK and found she wasn’t there.

Grenz’s daughters, Carla Elstad and Lucinda Christianson of Jamestown and Lynette Strube of Fergus Falls, Minn., have been driving throughout Jamestown looking for any sign of their mother.

“We assumed she may have gone down (U.S. Highway) 281 South, so we drove south of town and drove some of the roads off 281,” Elstad said.

Elstad said her mother doesn’t own a cellphone and doesn’t like to drive at night or on highways.

“I’m very concerned, it’s my mom,” she said.

Peterson said Grenz has a morning routine of going to the McDonald’s restaurant for breakfast, then walking in the Buffalo Mall. He said he checked both locations Wednesday and no one had seen her at either location.

Peterson said he is concerned that the coat Grenz was wearing isn’t suitable to wear in cold temperatures, and she may have spent the night in her vehicle.

Peterson said Grenz gets confused and disoriented due to medication she is taking. He said he talked with workers from Second Avenue Salon who were present when Grenz was at the salon Tuesday afternoon, and they said she appeared to be confused at times during her appointment. Grenz had gotten her hair permed.

“We’re asking people to take a look around their streets and neighborhoods to see if there is a minivan matching Grenz’s vehicle description,” Peterson said.

Anyone who might have seen Grenz or a vehicle matching the silver 2005 Dodge Caravan should call the Jamestown Police Department at (701) 252-1000.
