Road conditions have caused Stark County officials to close the section of 21st Street West temporarily between State Avenue and the 30th Street West bypass to the west, according to city spokesperson Lydia DeJesus.

Stark County Road Superintendent Al Heiser said the county and the City of Dickinson made the decision Monday night to close that section of 21st Street West because “it’s so full of potholes,” he said.

The road serves to connect northwest Dickinson to the new West Ridge Development and the four-lane Interstate 94 bypass road under construction.

“It’s the main artery through there, but we just felt it was too dangerous to travel,” Heiser said. “Sometimes people have to pass on the wrong side of the road to avoid potholes.”

Heiser said the road is expected to reopen on Wednesday if the weather clears up, and that temporary repairs are in order.

“It’s in bad shape,” he said. “If weather permits, maybe in the morning we’ll get something going.”

In addition, the city of Dickinson has started work on Fifth Street Southwest. Drivers may experience delays due to a road closure on Fifth Street Southeast. The closed section of road extends from Fifth Avenue Southeast to Main Avenue. Drivers should watch for detour signs and follow them accordingly to reduce delays.

Detours will also be in place for a section of Fifth Street Southwest from Main Avenue to First Avenue Southwest. Drivers are asked to follow the detour signs in place along the street. Full access to both sections of roadway is expected to return to normal by May 23, according to DeJesus.

City Administrator Shawn Kessel and DLN Consulting Inc., who has been hired by the city of Dickinson to serve as a public information coordinator, have implanted an information sharing and disseminating plan to tell the public about construction projects that could hinder traffic, according to a press release. DLN will utilize a city blog, social media, The Press and local radio stations to announce the status of work delays, detours, changes in utility schedules and other projects.
