JAMESTOWN — Carter Thompson’s name can be found on Fargo Post 2’s lineup anywhere from the top of the order to the No. 7 hole.

“He’s got good speed, so he can be a leadoff,” Post 2 coach Luke Rustad said. “But he’s also got good power, so he could bat in the No. 3 hole.”

Thompson finished 3 for 5 with a double and a home run from the No. 7 spot, and Post 2 topped Dickinson 12-5 at the Class AA state Legion tournament at Jack Brown Stadium.

Post 2 plays Jamestown or Grand Forks at 7 tonight.

“Our team has a lot of depth, and it really shows in games like this,” Thompson said.

Rustad said he thinks Thompson is the team’s leader in home runs, but a lower batting average keeps him from regularly hitting toward the top.

“He’s a streaky hitter,” Rustad said. “He has moments where he struggles for an at-bat or two. But when he catches fire, he can really hit the ball hard.”

Thompson singled and scored a run during an eight-run second inning that put Dickinson in a huge hole. Post 2 sent 12 batters to the plate, collecting four hits and also scoring two runs on wild pitches.

However, Fargo went scoreless until Thompson scored in the seventh. His two-out, three-run homer came in the eighth.

“The happy part is you got eight runs and you’re ahead in a state-tournament game,” Rustad said. “You get a big lead, and everybody thinks it’s gonna be a cakewalk, and it’s not. Dickinson’s a great baseball team.”

Post 2 starter Lincoln Voss breezed through the first four innings to pick up the win, but he did run into trouble and was pulled in the seventh. He gave up five earned runs on seven hits.

Dickinson’s Cole Anderson took over for starter Mark Erickson in the second inning and pitched into the eighth. He retired 12 in a row at one point.

“Cole came in and pitched well,” Dickinson coach Cory Hansen said. “That’s what he does. He doesn’t care who he throws against. He doesn’t overthink.”

Still, the Roughriders (23-18) failed to overcome the eight-run inning, despite cutting the lead to three and bringing the tying runner to the plate in the seventh inning.

“We just blew up in the second inning,” said Hansen, whose team meets Williston at 1 p.m. today. “We wanted to have double digits in hits (10) and that plan worked out. But we didn’t plan on beaning four guys, walking five and then imploding on defense. It’s kind of heartbreaking.”
