Press Expo: A fun-based event

Press Photo by Linda Sailer Amanda Galster, 3rd Avenue Floral sales associate, displays several Fairy Gardens on Thursday at the shop. The public will learn how to make similar arrangements at the Expo.

A day of food, fashion and fun is in store for everyone who attends The Dickinson Press Expo 2013.

The event is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Astoria Hotel and Event Center in Dickinson.

More than 50 vendors will be showcasing their products.

"There are no duplications," advertising director Rob Eilts said. "We have a unique selection of vendors from food to cosmetics and jewelry."

Advertising consultant Jenn Binstock said this year's expo is designed for everyone.

"It's more fun-based," she said. "A lot of ideas came together with the help of businesses."

The cooking demonstrations will feature personal chef Jennifer Kuntz, sponsored by Dan's Super Market.

"She will be talking about healthy snacks for kids and how to speed up dinner time," Binstock said.

A demonstration of how to make Fairy Gardens will be presented by 3rd Avenue Floral. The gardens begin with a novel container, such as a shallow box or bowl. They are filled with greenery, a fairy house or perhaps a lawn theme with benches and fountain.

The public may purchase the accessories and greenery to make a Fairy Garden at home or else ask for help at 3rd Avenue Floral.

"Especially little ones like to make fairy gardens," sales associate Amanda Galster said. "They leave with smiles on their faces."

A self-defense seminar starts at 11 a.m.

A fashion show at 3 p.m. will feature apparel by Starboard, Out of Town and Lillian's of Dickinson.

The Press also is sponsoring a makeover contest. Three winners receive a cut and color, makeup, outfit and accessories. The makeover contest reveal is at 1 p.m. Proceeds from the contest will be donated to the Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Center.

Numerous door prizes also will be awarded throughout the day.

Lunch will be served by the Dickinson High School cheerleaders, who are raising funds for a trip to Disney World. The cheerleaders will perform in the Disney Parks Christmas Day parade.

Advance Expo tickets are $4 and available at The Dickinson Press and Dan's Super Market. Tickets are $7 at the door. Tickets may be ordered by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope and check to: Dickinson Expo, P.O. Box 1367, Dickinson, ND 59602.
