Press names McGregor as new sports editor
After two years as a sports reporter, Royal McGregor was named the sports and outdoors editor of The Dickinson Press. The move was made official on Monday.
"He is the ideal choice for this position," Press Managing Editor Dustin Monke said. "He has performed exemplary in his two years as a sports reporter and it is only fitting that he steps into the sports editor role now that the position became available."
McGregor, a University of South Dakota graduate, was a sports reporter for the Yankton (S.D.) Press & Dakotan before coming to Dickinson to take the same position for the Press.
Now the sports editor, McGregor said he is looking forward to the next step in his career.
"It's exciting," he said. "It's an extremely humbling position. The last two years have been extremely fun."
During his two years at The Press, McGregor has covered a wide variety of sports on different levels including collegiate and high school sports.
McGregor said he developed solid connections with the people of Dickinson while supplying them with sports news.
"I've made a lot of good relationships with a lot of the people in the area, not only athletes but coaches as well," McGregor said. "I just hope to continue that."
McGregor will still report on high school athletics while The Press looks for a new sports reporter. The opening includes the responsibility of covering Dickinson State athletics among other beats.
Monke, a former Press sports editor, said he has seen McGregor develop "leaps and bounds" as a journalist and is eager to see his potential as a sports editor.
"He's ready for this transition to a new position," Monke said. "I'm excited to see what he can do with it."
