Cellular customers in and around Rhame could have enhanced cellphone coverage by sometime next year, according to the city’s auditor.

Margie Russ said Wednesday that the city has been in contact with a communications company, being contracted by AT&T, that is moving forward with an environmental site assessment for a location for the tower, which would be erected on property owned by Trace Wiffler, near where the town’s water tower sits.

Russ said the city has received one letter and one email from a Colorado company called Terracon about the site — officially located at 304 Parry Avenue — and the first phase of the environmental study.

A new tower, Russ said, would significantly aid cellular customers in Rhame, which has traditionally been home to poor reception.

“The cellphone reception here is basically nonexistent now,” Russ said. “The idea was brought up at a city council meeting last year, so people have been talking about this for a while.”

Riley Houston, an environmental specialist for Terracon, said Wednesday that his company’s client is Atlanta-based Municipal Communications, which he said is the developer for the proposed tower project and is working in conjunction with AT&T.

Spokesman Alex Carey of AT&T was traveling Wednesday and unavailable for comment on the project.

A person with knowledge of the proposed project said its completion could come as soon as this spring.
