The incident occurred at about 2 p.m., Superintendent Wade Northrop said. Administrators administered a lockdown and called the police. The Belfield Police Department and Stark County Sheriff’s Office responded.

Law enforcement were able to locate the suspicious man and determined the gun was actually a cellphone, Sheriff Clarence Tuhy said. The lockdown was lifted after 30 minutes and no one was injured.

School officials alerted parents of the incident, Northrop said. While it was a precaution, everyone responded to the lockdown very well, he added.

“Any time a student reports something like that, you have to take precautionary measures,” Northrop said.
