RICHARDTON -- The hallways of Richardton-Taylor High School have been filled with music in recent weeks, as the theater and music departments rehearse for Rodgers and Hammerstein's production of "The Sound of Music."

"It's been so much fun," said Lindsay Tyrrell, who plays the Von Trapp governess, Maria. "One of my friends starting talking about her favorite thing, and I had a strong urge to start singing."

The cast of students extends down to kindergarten with Ava Bartz playing Gretl, the youngest of the Von Trapp children.

For the senior class, it's a last activity they will do together in school.

"It's kind of a big hurrah for all of us -- all the kids in speech, all the kids in music and one-acts," Tyrrell said.

"The Sound of Music" is set in Austria during the 1940s when the Nazis take over the country. The story revolves around the Von Trapp family and their governess, a young nun, Maria.

"I actually had never seen the movie before, so I borrowed it from my teacher and speed watched it," Tyrrell said. "It was crazy like how similar I was doing it like the person in the movie and I didn't even know it."

Rehearsals have been under way since March.

"It's been a lot of work, an extraordinarily amount of work," said Ty Bloom, who plays the serious Capt. Von Trapp.

Lindsey Kuntz showcases her vocal talent as Mother Abbess.

"This is different than speech because we are more involved with other people instead of just by yourself," she said. "This is a lot of interaction and singing, which is fun."

Director Sue Anderson considered doing this musical for the last four years.

"I have so many connections to this group of seniors on so many levels -- it's been a truly rewarding experience, watching them grow in different ways," she said.

The musical is similar to the stage production, having several songs that are not in the movie, she said.

"We have a great group of seniors who have been developing their talent," she said. "It shows particularly in their acting ability -- that's the big thing."

RTHS Music Director Barb Gress is teaching the music for the production.

"It's been a lot of fun -- the kids love the music and are having a great time," she said.

As for their vocal talent, she added, "You will be surprised."

The cast includes Von Trap children -- Sierra Canerot as Louisa; Maggie Zentner as Liesel; Jacob Kuntz as Friedrich; Reagan Olson as Brigetta; Marshall Ziegler as Kurt and Bailey Paulson as Marta.

Joining Lindsey Kuntz with a rendition of "Maria" are the nuns, Alexia Hoff, Logan Olson and Erica Belzer.

Lane Aune will portray Rolf Gruber, the young Austrian caught up in Hitler's propaganda, while Paul Koppinger provides laughs with his character of Max Detweiller and Brianna Steiner plays Elsa Schraeder.

Other performers are Hunter Kuntz, Charlee Scott, Dakota Messer, Bradley Messer, Samantha Steiner, Adam Messmer, Kaylyn Arnold, Lizzi Bohn, Ariana Dressler, McKensy Friedt, Rachel Goetz, Bailey Isaak, Lindsey Kirschenheiter, Victoria Kitzan, Megan Kuhn, Tawyna Miller, Halle Olson, Destina Schank, Bianca Sperry and McKinzee Stein.

The performances are 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 19 in the school gymnasium.
