The final race of the day came down to seven-hundredths of a second.

Ketti Ringwall, a Dickinson Trinity junior who competes for Williston, swam the anchor leg in the 400-yard freestyle relay, but Minot's Mckenna Brown edged out the win.

"That was an exciting one," Ringwall said with a smile. "Minot is definitely the team to beat this year in that relay. Knowing that we were this close to them in this meet is good to know that we are gaining confidence."

The Williston swimming and diving team, who co-ops with Dickinson High and Trinity, claimed second place at Saturday's Dickinson Invitational held at the West River Community Center.

"I thought we did really well for being tired and coming off this week in practice," Williston head coach Thomas Wheeling said. "Second place is nice place to finish when we are swimming off events. We just wanted to see what else we could do and I thought they performed pretty well."

Minot won the team title with 640 points, while Coyotes finished runner-up (539) and Mandan placed third (443). Bismarck High rounded out the four teams in the invitational with 371 points.

Before the invitational started, Wheeling wanted some of the girls to compete in different races. Williston used the meet to its advantage, gaining some confidence.

"It was really good to see the girls in some different races," he said. "It gave me an idea on what else they can do. I think it shows them too, that they can push themselves both physically and mentally to do races that are outside their comfort zones."

Ringwall, ultimately, won three events.

She won the 100 freestyle (56.07 seconds), 200 freestyle (2:01.39) and 200 medley relay (1:57.07). The Coyotes finished with a time of 3:51.85 in the 400 freestyle relay.

"I was happy with both my individual events," Ringwall said. "I cut a little time in the 200 and I was trying a new breathing technique. It worked and that's good to know. I added a couple seconds in my 100 time, but I won, so I can't complain."

The Coyotes also had Dickinson High freshman Leah Grove place third in 100 freestyle (1:00.1), second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:48.73) and third in 400 freestyle relay (4:07.72).

Though overall the times might have only slightly increased, the swimmers realize as the season winds to a close the times will eventually go down.

"I think we did pretty well," Dickinson senior Samie Bohl said. "We are going to continue to get better as we go down in yards."

Bohl improved her time in the 500 freestyle (6:05.1) by six seconds to place seventh. The Dickinson senior was caught a little off guard with her final time in the event.

"I was kind of surprised, because we had peak week a couple weeks ago and we had a really hard week this week." she said. "I'm really happy with that one."

After performing well, Wheeling hopes this meet can serve as a confidence booster for the rest of the season.

"It's going to be a positive of week of practice coming up," he said. "From here on out, it's going to be a nice decline in yards in practice and that always makes their attitudes come up. It helps built confidence."
