Roughriders hang on, split with Keybirds
WILLISTON — The Dickinson Roughriders American Legion baseball team found enough pitching and offense for an opening win.
Dickinson won the opener 5-4, but Williston nabbed the split with a 6-5 victory during the second game on Tuesday.
In the opening game, the Keybirds threatened with bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Dickinson starter Mark Erickson was pulled and reliever Lucas Jones attempted to close out the game.
Jones collected a bases loaded strikeout for the save and Erickson picked up the win. Jones also provided a RBI double in the sixth inning, while Andrew Heckaman had a two-run single.
During the second game, Dickinson’s Dylan Skabo was tagged with six runs in the first three innings.
Though Skabo threw the next three innings, he couldn’t shake off Williston’s early run production. Dickinson managed to cut the Keybirds’ lead down to one — 5-4 — but it couldn’t fully recover.
Dickinson’s Luke Herauf supplied a solo home run in the fourth inning for the Roughriders’ first run.
The Roughriders have a quick turnaround and travel to Spearfish (S.D.) for a doubleheader starting at 5:30 p.m. today.
