The luncheon is at noon on Thursday, Oct. 26, in the Dickinson Elks Lodge.

Over 330 volunteers from 12 southwestern North Dakota communities are being recognized, said VISTA volunteer Diane Pommerer, who works at the RSVP office.

Killdeer's Hill Top Home of Comfort is one of the newest sites, where volunteers entertain or visit with the residents.

Other volunteers help deliver meals for Elder Care, sort clothes at Dickinson's House of Manna, play cards at the nursing homes, mentor students with reading, do filing or provide musical entertainment.

"It keeps them busy and they like getting out among people," said Pommerer.

The volunteers report their hours to the RSVP office for documentation in applying for federal funding, a mill levy match, United Way funding and other donations.

Pommerer said volunteers are needed to deliver meals for the Elder Care program. Other volunteers could help as student mentors or playground duty.

"I need men to help at the House of Manna, for moving items and lifting furniture. They are just crying for help out there," she said.

As Pommerer nears the end of her service time as a VISA volunteer, she said, "I've met so many interesting people. I've enjoyed the seniors a lot."

The RSVP program is open to volunteers ages 55 and older. The program is designed to enhance the community by sharing of talents.
