Salvation Army of Stark County asking for donations of winter wear
The Salvation Army of Stark County has extended the deadline for its "Coats for Kids" collection.
Coats may be donated until Sept. 30 at the RSVP+ office at First St. E. or Sax Motor Co., 52 2st St. E.
The winter coats and related items are needed by families who may have moved here from mild climates, RSVP+ specialist Rick Gordon said.
"We need all kinds of mittens, gloves, hats, snow pants, coats for children, men and women -- they are all needed," he said.
The goal is to exceed last year's collection of 200, he said.
The coats will be cleaned at St. Joseph's Hospital and Health Center prior to distribution.
The distribution date is during Project Service Connect from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Oct. 17 at Lincoln Elementary School.
New RSVP+ specialist
Gordon recently accepted the position of RSVP+ specialist for the Dakota West Branch. He is replacing AJ Hitchcock.
Gordon, who has been in education for 25 years, is looking forward to the new position.
"The biggest thing is I get to go home at night feeling I made a difference -- that's what I look for in any of my jobs -- did I make a difference today," he said.
He said more than 500 individuals of all ages from throughout southwestern North Dakota are registered with the program.
"So many people out there are doing so many things," he said. "If they weren't there, a lot of our social backbone would fall apart throughout the whole southwest."
