Scouts plan Roughrider Roundup
The Roughrider District, Boy Scouts of America, will host its 14th annual Roughrider Roundup on Thursday.
The lawn social is 5-7 p.m. at the home of Dr. Morton and Cheryl Krieg. It will feature refreshments, dinner and music by Dakota Breeze.
Guest speaker is Scouting Executive Travis Christopher from Fargo, who will give an update on the status of Scouting in the Northern Lights Council.
District Executive Corey Mueller said proceeds from the fundraiser will go into an endowment fund to support the Heart Butte Scout Reservation at Lake Tschida.
"The camp is a wonderful resource that had fallen into disservice," he said. "Now it's maintained as a camp for the whole council. It's a beautiful area."
Mueller was named district executive in June. Growing up in Bloomington, Minn., he moved to Dickinson after working as a page in the House of Representatives. His interest in Scouting goes back to his youth, and he earned the Eagle Scout award as a member of Troop 473.
Darryl Wehner, an assistant Scoutmaster and assistant camp ranger, listed several camp projects for the upcoming months.
"We will be renovating more campsite shelters and we are putting in handicapped accessible latrines," Wehner said.
The timeline for the projects depends on availability of volunteers, he said.
Volunteers also are moving the open-air chapel away from the water.
"The problem is the lake is moving closer to the chapel," he said. "Whenever there is high water in the spring, the chapel is within 12 feet of the bank."
Volunteers poured footings on Mother's Day weekend, and finished pouring the concrete on Aug. 10.
"We will move the structure on the concrete and reset the seating in September," he said.
The Roughrider Roundup is open to everyone who wishes to support the Scouting program. To reserve tickets, contact Mueller at 701-471-4222.
