Something for every woman: South Dakotan opens lingerie store in downtown Dickinson
By April Baumgarten
It’s a question that women ask when they first move to Dickinson. About a month ago, the answer would have usually been “online” or “take a 90-mile drive to Bismarck.”
“There is nowhere else,” Shannon Escott said. “A friend of mine was talking about how she wanted to get some lingerie, and she spent hours looking at Herberger’s and Walmart and couldn’t find anything that she liked or was age appropriate.”
That got Escott thinking. A lingerie store was one thing Dickinson didn’t have that she felt the area needed. On June 19, the thought became a reality. Escott opened the doors to Savannah Says, a lingerie store in the basement of the Park Square building on First Avenue West.Escott, who hails from Faith, S.D., first came to Dickinson in 2006 as a biology student at Dickinson State University. She then transferred to Chadron (Neb.) State College, where she graduated in 2008.She worked almost four years with the Southwest Multi-County Correctional Center before taking a job with Stallion Oilfield Services in Dickinson.By day, Escott is a full-time A/P clerk for Stallion. But on Thursday and Friday evenings and most of the day Saturday, customers can find her surrounded by the hot pink walls of her store.Shoppers that walk down the stairs will find underwear, bras, pajama sets, corsets, leggings and lingerie. She also has several activewear items, including sports bras. When Escott opened the store, she had one thing in mind: to provide a comfortable, quality product that was reasonable. Not to mention saving money on gas.The average bra pice, she said, is between $16 and $20. Underwear averages $7.“My main goal is to have a woman of any size, any woman of any size, come in and find something that makes them feel sexy,” she added. The area for the store may seem small — Escott hopes to eventually move to location with a store-front — but there is an advantage to being in the basement. The location offers a secluded, intimate place for women to try on lingerie without being judged.“There’s not a million people walking by looking in, seeing what everyone is buying,” Escott said. “That is the advantage of having it down here.”Escott said she has had a lot of positive feedback on the idea of opening the store. News of the store has traveled mostly via word of mouth and Facebook.Thursdays are her busiest because customers come in during the Alive@5 event, which coincides with her hours.Though she has only been open for three weeks, customers have shuffled in and out. Shoppers can also make appointments for private showings.“I have a group of 15 to 20 ladies … that want to do private shopping,” Escott said. “The whole store will be closed just for them.”The owner plans to go to vendor shows to look for products to expand her inventory, including adding more sizes, styles and activewear. She also hopes to add lotion to her stock.“(I’m) just kind of testing the waters to see what people are interested in,” she said.Escott plans to have a grand opening at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 26.
