South Heart to celebrate 100 years
SOUTH HEART - The city of South Heart is celebrating its 100th birthday with an array of events, as well as an all-school reunion July 26-28.
South Heart's centennial officially begins Thursday, June 26, with a pre-centennial dance and beer gardens at Adamski Park and Baseball Diamond.
The celebration continues on Friday with a kick-off street dance and beer garden, featuring a local Elvis impersonator. Also starting Friday is a milestone event for South Heart.
"In conjunction with the centennial, we will be having South Heart's first ever all-school reunion," said Lori Wagner, chairperson of the event.
Events for alumni of South Heart Schools vary from a golf scramble Friday morning to South Heart School tours Saturday afternoon.
Saturday morning starts with a centennial parade showcasing a variety of tractors, floats, and cars from around the area. Although many have signed up, Wagner says they are taking entrants until the beginning of the parade.
From 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, nine inflatable games are available for children. Wagner said in addition to the normal inflatables, newer ones are to be featured.
"Most people around Dickinson figure the inflatables are things like the jumping castle, the bouncer and the basic slide," Wagner said. "But we took it one step further and we have a waterslide one, T-ball, and just a variety of different games inside each one. It's very interactive for kids of all ages."
Wristbands to take part in the inflatables run $5 for an all-day pass.
A local Boy Scout group is holding children's games from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., with tickets available at the gate.
For adults, an arts and crafts fair, as well as a car and motorcycle show, are free.
"We have about a dozen entrants already for the art and craft fair from local vendors that are coming into the show and sell their products," Wagner said. "For the car and motorcycle show we do have some entrants, but we are looking for more."
To commemorate the event, memorabilia is available for sale at South Heart High School. Items include jackets, T-shirts and sweatshirts. A unique item, a Commemorative South Heart stamp cancellation, is also available.
"The postmaster in South Heart was involved in getting this started," Wagner said. "Our town no longer has a cancellation stamp because that is all done in Bismarck, and the U.S. Postal Service makes them for special celebrations. So on that day, people can have anything cancelled with that stamp, and it will look like a cancellation stamp that people have now."
On Saturday afternoon, a magic/mentalist show is to be held by the local group "Mystical Minds," involving a variety of magic tricks that interact with the audience, Wagner said.
Ending the centennial weekend is a party in the park and beer gardens with the music of "The Great Outdoors."
"We incorporated a variety of events geared toward alumni, community members and other members of the area," Wagner said.
