SOUTH HEART -- Residents here woke up to a disrupted water supply Wednesday morning after contractors doing work in the city hit a water line.

South Heart Mayor Floyd Hurt said the city's water was back on as of 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Hurt said earlier in the day that a line near where work was being done on a set of new city water tanks was struck sometime before 8 a.m. Wednesday.

"It was an old line that got hit," Hurt said. "We had to shut the water off, so there was no water at all going to the city. The contractor hit the line, but, really, it was our fault.

"There should have been an elbow connecting the line where it was hit, but there was a T. It's something that happened about 20 years ago," he said.

Hurt said part of the water line was exposed due to excavation work being done in the area and added that he wasn't blaming the contractor, saying, "It just something that happens."

Southwest Water Authority CEO Mary Massad said Wednesday morning that her office received a call about the break just before 8 a.m.

Farmer's Daughter Café owner Mary Hodell said she was forced to close her restaurant in South Heart for the day because of the water situation.
