GRAND FORKS — Once Ketti Ringwall jumped to an early, Dickinson coach Kristy Roller knew the championship title was in the bag.

Ringwall, a senior at Dickinson Trinity, won the 200-freestyle title with a time of 1 minute, 54.07 seconds as part of the Williston swimming and diving team during the North Dakota state swimming and diving meet on Saturday at the Hyslop Sports Center.

“It was very exciting and it was a close race,” Roller said. “She got a really start and she was ahead of everybody by at least half a body length. I knew she was going to come out hard and I knew she wanted it. She came away with it at the end.”

The title win marks Ringwall’s first as a swimmer and Roller’s first as a head coach. Roller said there so many emotions once Ringwall touched the final wall.

“It was a very emotional day with her being that she is a senior,” Roller said. “I’m so proud of her. With how hard she’s worked, she deserves it.”

During Ringwall’s second individual race of the meet, she finished runner-up in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.64. Dani Bergeson of Bismarck Century won the event (51.07).

As a team, the Coyotes placed sixth with a total 177 points. Minot won the event at 337 points, while West Fargo came in runner-up with 326. Fargo North rounded out the top three teams with 315 points.

Dickinson brought four swimmers to the state meet. Out of the four, there was one senior, one sophomore and two seventh-graders. Roller said it’s a valuable experience to reach the state tournament early in their high school careers.

“It’s a good experience for them and it shows them how intense the two days actually are,” Roller said. “They are going to learn more about what it is going to take in the upcoming years.”

Patriots sweep,

end Dickinson’s season

JAMESTOWN — Though the Dickinson High volleyball team isn’t advancing to the North Dakota Class A state tournament, head coach Jay Schobinger wasn’t disappointed in the team’s effort.

Bismarck Century used a pair of double-digit hitters to sweep past the Midgets 25-16, 25-12, 25-19 during the state-qualifying game at the West Region Tournament on Saturday.

“We were playing a pretty darn good team and we just came up a little short,” Schobinger said. “We came a long way since the beginning of the season. Even though, we aren’t extending our season we got better and we can call the season a success.”

Alaina Furcht and Jordyn Jossart supplied 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Furcht also notched a match-high 14 blocks. Shay Bense added 33 assists and 10 digs.

For the Midgets, Sierra Rohr finished with six kills and two blocks. Rohr and Keely Hutchens were each named to the All-West Region team. Meryl Kovacs posted five kills and two blocks, while Madison Schobinger dished out 14 assists and Mackee Hofmann supplied 12 digs.

With the end of the season, the Midgets will lose eight players to graduation. Other than juniors Marissa Schroeder and Kovacs, Dickinson is going to be real young and inexperienced, but Schobinger said it isn’t bad.

“Next year we are going to be as young and as inexperience as we’ve been in all my years,” Schobinger said. “We are going to look at next year as a big time learning year. That is going to be kind of fun and exciting.”
