Trinity takes 1st in boys, girls 1st track meet of season

BEACH -- In Dickinson Trinity's first track and field meet of the season, the team had few complaints.

The Titans' boys and girls each took first place and had four state-qualifying marks on Saturday.

"We are very happy," Trinity co-head coach Andrew DesRosier said. "We had a beautiful day. It was so much to see how hard the kids worked. They were excited to get outside and have an opportunity to run. The way they competed really made a coach proud."

On the boys side, Dickinson Trinity won with 132 points, Bowman County was runner-up with 123.5 and Heart River took third with 119.

Trinity qualified in two events on the boys side and two on the girls side as the pole vaulters nabbed spots on the boys and girls side.

Mckenzie Kostelecky, who placed fourth at the state meet last year, took first in the event at 9-feet.

Senior Mason Heth, who came close to qualifying last year but just came up short, didn't waste any time as he punched his ticket to state. The senior finished runner-up -- to Bowman County's Tanner Fischer -- at 12 feet.

"Mason came close last year and just missed it," DesRosier said. "For him to come out and qualify in the first meet, takes a lot of pressure off him for the rest of the season."

Ben Gordon took fourth at the state meet in the javelin last year. In his first meet of the season, he threw a strike at 166-6 to take first. He handled the opposing competition, winning by more than 30 feet.

"He's been throwing well for us for several years, but for him to get it knocked off in the first meet is really nice," DesRosier said.

On the girls side, Trinity placed first with 137 points, Bowman County was runner-up with 108 and Mott-Regent rounded out the top three spots with 103.

The other state qualifier on the girls side was the 400-meter relay made up of Molly Schweitzer, Kostelecky, Selina Kudrna and Kennedy Keator. The quartet finished with a time of 52.58 seconds.

Though Trinity's Shannon Stockert was the only competitor in the girls 3,200 run, she set a personal-best time.

"She won the regional championship in that event last year," DesRosier said. "In the first meet of the year, she broke the 13-minute mark. She set a personal record by more than 10 seconds. It just shows how dedicated she was during the offseason and how hard she's worked in this very long preseason."

The other state qualifiers from the area on the boys side were in the 400 and 800 relay by teams from Heart River. The Cougars used the team of Cole Hecker, Tyson Kudrna, Cole Hlebechuk and Seth Ewoniuk to qualify in the 400 (45.93) and 800 (1:34.93) relays.

Bowman County's Fischer won the pole vault at 12 feet to requalify for the state meet.
