UND names Pattyn captain for next season
GRAND FORKS — The General now has another title — captain.
Pattyn, a forward from Ste. Anne, Man., was an alternate captain last season and will take over captain duties from graduated defenseman Dillon Simpson.
UND’s alternate captains will be seniors Michael Parks, Mark MacMillan and Connor Gaarder.
“I’m very, very excited,” Pattyn said. “I’m excited for next year. We know the potential our team has. We’ve been in the gym for a month now. We want to build off of what our team did. We got a sniff of it and we want more. Hopefully, the summer goes by quickly.”Pattyn has been pegged as a potential captain since his freshman year at UND, when he came to campus as a recruited walk-on and immediately impressed teammates and coaches with his leadership qualities.Pattyn said he learned from Simpson, Andrew MacWilliam and Mario Lamoureux — the three UND captains during his time.“Those are three guys I’ve learned a lot from and will take things from each guy,” Pattyn said. “They all brought something different that I learned from them leadership-wise. I’m going to try to combine all the things that I’ve learned.”On the ice, Pattyn has never been a healthy scratch in his career, playing in 125 games through three seasons. Last season, he had career highs in both goals (seven) and points (16), while increasing his role throughout the season.By the end, he was a key cog on the first power-play unit, while getting top-six forward ice time.Prior to coming to UND, Pattyn served as captain of the Portage Terriers in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.Parks will wear an ‘A’ for the second consecutive season, while MacMillan and Gaarder are first-year alternate captains.MacMillan, a two-time all-conference academic selection and a candidate for the Hockey Humanitarian Award, registered a career-high 26 points last season. Gaarder emerged as a leader down the stretch, most notably scoring UND’s game-winning goal in double overtime in the Midwest Regional final.
