Underclassmen lead Midgets at state
BISMARCK — Seniors on the Dickinson High track and field teams are tough to find.
Junior Jackson Binstock and sophomore Wyatt Kainz placed for Dickinson on the boys side while sophomore Kesley Calhoun was the Midgets’ only girl to place on Friday, the first day of the meet.
Binstock took sixth in the 1,600-meter run. He finished with a time of 4 minutes, 23.32 seconds.
The junior distance runner couldn’t complain about his time. It was his second-best time of the season.
“It was a good day,” he said. “It was a little warm, but it was a good race. I wish I could have placed higher, but it was a good time. I’m pretty happy with it.”
Binstock will also compete in the 3,200 run and 1,600 relay today. He’s qualified in the 800, but isn’t quite sure if he’ll run it.
“Probably not the 800,” Binstock said. “I’m in it, but I might not run it. Probably not.”
Kainz took seventh in the long jump. The sophomore has now placed at state in two different events in his first two trips to the meet. Kainz ended the 2013 season in a tie for sixth place in the high jump. The sophomore will compete in the high jump today. His best height is 6 feet, 5 inches.
Calhoun reached the state meet as a freshman, but didn’t place. She didn’t want to wait another year as she took eighth in the javelin. Her throw of 116-4 was her best of the season.
“I felt a lot better than last year,” she said. “I was happy, for the most part. I felt I could do better, but I still have two more years.”
Not only did the state placement boost Calhoun’s spirits, but she said this performance will help motivate her during the offseason.
“It makes me really happy that I actually placed as a sophomore,” she said.
Midgets senior Jace Dukart reached the finals in the open 100, 200 and 400. Dukart will also run the 1,600 relay.
Junior Carter Blackwell reached the finals in 300 hurdles after he finished with the fifth-fastest time (39.64). He said it will good to focus on just event for the final day.
“I have my one event and I have do good in it,” he said. “I have to get some points for us. We are doing our hardest and we are trying to get as many points on the board as we can. We just have to bring it (today).”
