Updated: 5- to 7-barrel oil leak discovered in Divide County
A 5- to 7-barrel oil leak from a 1-inch oil gathering line was discovered in Divide County, the state learned Thursday.
Hiland Crude, the company in charge of the line, is on site cleaning up and has stopped the leak, state Department of Emergency Services spokeswoman Cecily Fong said. Fong said the leak is near a "small slough" of water.
Dave Glatt, chief of environmental health at the Department of Health, said it's always a concern when oil reaches surface water.
Hiland has booms in the water to contain the oil spill, will dig out the contaminated soil and will vacuum the oil off the surface of the water, he said.
A press release sent Thursday evening originally stated the spill was approximately 150 barrels of oil. A Hiland Crude employee later said the spill was approximately 10 barrels.
