GRAND FORKS -- The future of Roebuck and Buck was the theme Saturday afternoon at The Betty Englestad Center.

Before the University of North Dakota women's basketball program has to deal with next year's retirement of veteran coach Gene Roebuck, the team has to learn how to play without leading scorer Madi Buck.

In the first game since Roebuck announced his retirement after 25 years with the program, Buck's absence was evident everywhere in Utah Valley's 58-54 win over North Dakota in Great West Conference play.

"I don't want to make excuses; give Utah Valley credit," Roebuck said. "But it does hurt to miss your leading shooter and rebounder. We need players who have been here before to step up and take responsibility. We need to be better in the post. I thought we would have an advantage there, but we didn't get the job done."

Utah Valley takes a leg up in the Great West race, improving to 9-9 overall. UND dropped to 9-10.
