Warmer temperatures brought out qualifying frenzy

The meet was hot and the track and field athletes were on fire.

Nearly every race and many of the field events saw at least one state qualifier, both on the boys or girls side.

The Richardton-Taylor Invitational saw many Class B teams from around the Southwest Region, plus a handful of Dickinson High athletes, competing on Tuesday at the Biesiot Activities Center.

"We had so many things happen around the track today," Dickinson Trinity co-head coach Andrew DesRosier said. "We had a lot of PR's and a couple state-qualifying efforts. The kids really took advantage of the weather and made it a great day."

The warm weather also aided Bowman County senior Michael Palczewski and Mott-Regent junior Abby Honeyman, who are both returning from hamstring injuries. Palczewski and Honeyman were both glad to get out on the track.

Palczewski didn't plan on running today because he is still nursing a hamstring injury, but said the weather was too nice not to compete. The last time Palczewski ran was in the early parts of April.

"The hamstring feels really good right now," said Palczewski, who has signed a letter of intent to compete for the Dickinson State men's track and field team. "Those were my first two 400s since April, so it feels good to be back."

Palczewski ran a state-qualifying time in the 400-meter run at 51.51 seconds. He also helped the 1,600 relay team take second (3:40.39) and the 800 relay place third (1:36.59).

"Originally, I was going to wait until Saturday, but I thought maybe I could try it today and it ended up being a really good day for me," Palczewski said with a smile.

As for Honeyman, the invite marked her second meet of the season. Her first was the New-Salem Invitational at the Bismarck Community Bowl Saturday. She knows everything isn't going to happen at once, but it's slowly coming together.

"That's probably the biggest thing right now is getting my head straight and getting my confidence back," Honeyman said. "I just want to take it one meet at a time and not look into the future too much."

Honeyman had a qualifying distance of 34 feet, 4 inches in the triple jump. She also helped the Wildfire run state-qualifying times in the 400 (52.76) and 800 (1:51.45) relays. Though she won the 100 hurdles, she didn't run a state-qualifying time, which is one event she is looking forward to at the Trinity Town Crier Invitational on Saturday.

"It's nice to be back, but I have a lot of room for strengthening and getting back in shape," Honeyman said. "I'm hoping to get my hurdles qualified by Saturday and taking it one event at a time."

Trinity added one new qualifier on the girls side -- Kaitlyn Grinsteinner -- in the 400. The junior ran a time of 1:01.29, which is more than a full second faster than her seeded time coming in.

"It's exciting right now that we are getting a bunch of different events qualified for state right now," Grinsteinner said. "The weather is definitely a big part of that and we are taking advantage of every opportunity we can get."

However, it was the boys side that shined for Trinity on Tuesday. The team started it off with a bang in the 3,200 relay. As defending state champions in the event, the Titans used Jace Kruger, Dylan Gress, Alex Binstock and Mitchell Meyer to run a state-qualifying time of 8:34.44, which was nearly a full 12 seconds faster than their fastest time coming in.

"A couple guys really had to press there," DesRosier said. "They worked very hard, but I think we showed room for improvement in that race too. It's great to have it qualified and think that we still have a better time."

Meyer turned around to run a state-qualifying time in the 800 run (2:02.75). Jackson Binstock, a sophomore at DHS, won the 800 and qualified for the state meet with a time of 2:01.22. Binstock has already qualified in the 1,600, 3,200 and 3,200 relay.

"It feels good to have a couple extra events to compete in for the state meet," Binstock said. "I wasn't really looking to qualify the 800 this year. I wanted to work on lowering my times in the one mile and two mile."

As for the team results, Trinity won the girls side with 106 points, while Hazen was runner-up with 96 and Mott-Regent rounded out the top three with 80.

On the boys side, Hazen took first with 116 points and Bowman County finished runner-up with 81. Trinity placed third with 71.

Qualifiers for the Midgets were Abby Grove in the javelin (110-2), while Levi Jordheim finished runner-up in the long jump with a state-qualifying distance of 20-9.

Many of the teams that ran at the BAC on Tuesday will return for the Town Crier Invitational at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

"It will be nice to get back to practice for a few days and come back on Saturday and see where we can improve," DesRosier said. "We have continued to add state qualifiers in every meet we've gone to and really added several this meet. We've gained a lot of momentum."
