Wasting no time: Dickinson handles Saints at West Region Tournament

The top-seeded Dickinson High baseball team didn’t wait long to put Bismarck St. Mary’s into a permanent deficit.

Dickinson’s starting pitcher Brett Schweitzer helped his team make times tough for the Saints.

The Midgets had three multi-run innings — including a pair of four-run frames — en route to a 10-1 win over No. 8 seed St. Mary’s during the first-round of the West Region Tournament on Thursday at the Southside Municipal Ballpark and Astoria Field.

“The boys know what we need to do and they get after it with the bats and running the bases,” Dickinson head coach Pete Dobitz said.

Despite the Midgets (22-4) being the No. 1 seed, they weren’t taking the Saints lightly. Dickinson edged St. Mary’s 4-1 at home on May 6.

“It was a battle last game,” Dickinson junior third baseman Luke Herauf said. “We just came in, tried not to overlook them, we started off good, then went a little even-keel, but then picked it back up.”

Dickinson ended the first inning with a 4-0 lead. The four-run first inning was finished with a Dylan Wallner two-RBI single to right field.

From there, Schweitzer went into cruise control throwing six shutout innings. Schweitzer threw seven innings, allowed one run on five hits and struck out one. The only inning he allowed a run was the sixth when St. Mary’s Tom Berry drove in Jacob Brucker on a RBI ground out.

“I hadn’t thrown in two weeks,” said Schweitzer, who also went 3 for 3 with a RBI and run. “My last outing was against Jamestown — a couple Thursday’s ago. My arm was fresh and I was feeling good. There was a lot of life on the fastball.”

The Midgets posted 16 hits — two of which included a pair of sixth-inning triples. Dickinson had five players with multiple hits. Dylan Skabo finished with a team-high four hits and three runs. Herauf posted two hits — including a two run triple in the sixth — and a team-high three RBI. Michael McChesney and Wallner each finished with a pair of hits.

Though Dickinson only stole three bases, the speed kept St. Mary’s attention with plenty of pickoff attempts. The Saints picked off McChesney at second in the first inning.

“They are athletic,” St. Mary’s head coach Reid Flaagan said. “Like they say, ‘Speed never slumps.’ They can hit on the ground and beat it out.”

The Midgets finished the scoring in the sixth inning. Wallner started the inning with a triple and Herauf drove in the final two runs with a triple to deep right-center field.

Dickinson continues the West Region Tournament playing No. 4 seed Bismarck Century at 4 p.m. today. Whether they played the Patriots or Minot, the Midgets were in for a battle. The two teams handed Dickinson three of its four losses this season.

“I know (Century and Minot) are Nos. 4 and 5, but they’ve handed us three of our four losses,” Dobitz said. “We have to stay focused and we have to stay intense. It doesn’t matter who it is and what game it is. We have to get after it like we did at the beginning of this game.”

Schweitzer added: “We just need to keep up the intensity the entire time. Coach talks about never letting up and we have to stay focused the entire time and get the job done.”
