Western ND under tornado watch, part of area in tornado warning as severe thunderstorm moves through southwest ND

Much of western North Dakota is under a tornado watch, a small area east of Dickinson is in a tornado warning and six of its southwestern counties remain in a severe thunderstorm warning as the storm moves east through the area, according to the National Weather Service in Bismarck.

A tornado warning has been issued for northeast Stark County, northwest Morton County and southwest Mercer County until 3 p.m. MDT. The storm located 23 miles east of Dickinson near Richardton is capable of producing a tornado, according to the National Weather Service.

East Stark County, southeastern Dunn County, northwest Grant County, northeast Hettinger County, southwest Mercer County and northwest Morton County remain in a thunderstorm warning until 3:30 p.m. MDT. 

The thunderstorm, moving east at about 25 mph, could produce 70 mph winds and and hail the size of ping-pong balls.

The tornado watch lasts until 6 p.m. MDT and includes all the southwestern counties.
